Judge colour under the lamp you turn on at seven

Most catalog photography is a noon climate: bright, even, a little blue. Most living happens after work, under a warm lamp, with the curtains half drawn.
A sage linen that looked calm at midday can go muddy next to a tungsten bulb. A walnut stain that looked chocolate can go orange. Neither is a defect. Both are light.
In the studio the room keeps the exposure of the photo you fed it. If you shoot at the hour you actually sit in the room, the preview inherits that hour. A lunchtime snap of a west-facing lounge will flatter pieces that fail at dinner.
When you are unsure, take a second photo at night and drop the same shortlist into both reconstructions. The piece that survives both climates is the one you will still like in January.
