Sofa depth is a lifestyle choice, not a style one

Deep American lounge seats assume a room that can spare the extra 20 cm and a household that watches long films. Shallow European seats assume conversation and a tighter plan.

Neither is more correct. A deep sofa in a 3.4 metre room leaves an aisle you resent. A shallow sofa in a house where everyone sprawls will feel like a waiting-room bench.

The studio shows the footprint. It cannot show whether you sit or lie. Be honest about that before you fall for the look of a vast cushion.

If you want both, a deep sofa and a pair of upright chairs is clearer than one compromise seat that satisfies nobody after twenty minutes.
